GA4 Made Simple: A Beginner's Guide to Google Analytics 4

Jan 18, 2025 8 min read Jahirul Islam Naeem
In short: GA4 replaces Universal Analytics with an event-based model that tracks web and app activity in one property, and getting value from it comes down to a correct property setup and knowing which reports matter.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is a complete rebuild from Universal Analytics - and yes, the learning curve is real. But once you understand how it works, it's incredibly powerful for understanding your audience and measuring ROI.

Why GA4 Matters

GA4 is now the only official Google Analytics platform. It tracks both websites and apps in one property, uses an event-based model, and is built for privacy-first, cookieless measurement.

The Event-Based Model

In GA4, everything is an event. Page views, button clicks, video plays - all events. This makes GA4 far more flexible and precise than UA ever was.

Auto-collected events (page_view, session_start, first_visit) work out of the box. Custom events like form submissions require Google Tag Manager setup.

Setup Steps

  1. Create GA4 property at analytics.google.com

  2. Add a web data stream, copy Measurement ID

  3. Install via Google Tag Manager

  4. Verify in DebugView report

  5. Mark key events as Conversions in Admin
