Top 5 Facebook Ad Mistakes Beginners Make (And How to Fix Them)

Jan 10, 2025 7 min read Jahirul Islam Naeem
In short: Most beginner Facebook ad accounts underperform because of five fixable mistakes: wrong audience size, weak landing pages, stopping ads too early, only testing one creative, and broken pixel tracking.

Running Facebook Ads is easy. Running them profitably? Much harder. After auditing dozens of ad accounts, I keep seeing the same five mistakes. Good news: every one is fixable.

Mistake #1: Wrong Audience Size

Either targeting everyone or narrowing too tight. Start with 500K–3M audience size and let the algorithm optimize.

Fix: Use interest-based targeting as a starting point, then switch to broad matching once you have 50+ conversion events.

Mistake #2: Weak Landing Page

Your ad gets the click - your landing page closes the sale. Mismatched headlines, slow load times, and missing social proof all kill conversions.

Mistake #3: Stopping Ads Too Early

Facebook needs 50 optimization events per ad set within 7 days. Most people quit at day 2. Give each set at least $18 and 5–7 days before judging.

Mistake #4: Only One Creative

Always test 3–5 variations: different hooks, images, and CTAs. You cannot know what wins without testing.

Mistake #5: Broken Pixel Tracking

Without proper conversion tracking, Facebook optimizes for clicks - not sales. Install Pixel, set up standard events (ViewContent, AddToCart, Purchase), and verify with Pixel Helper.
